Forage In The Wild Patch

Every so often, we get the cheekiest of visitors to our garden, squirrels. They dart in with bright eyes fixed on the peanuts we leave out. One afternoon, a single squirrel caught my attention, perched on a slender branch with its tail curled around him, utterly absorbed in his feast. In that moment of unhurried bliss, the familiar tug of inspiration stirred, urging me to capture this little critter on paper.

To echo the garden’s hue and texture, I turned to earthy greens in watercolour. I used a dash of iridescent colour and soft washes that pool and drift like dappled sunlight through leaves. Flowing freely with pencil I sketched the softness of fur and the playful arc of a tail. The watercolour paper itself gives a gentle, subtle texture hinting at grassy moss and bark.

This is a small postcard A6 300gsm painted in the moment. I love this as an intimate scale where I can make each piece feel complete yet brimming, like a small world held in the palm. Take a closer look at the picture and initial ideas below and let this little soul bring a spark of the wild indoors.
