Gaze In The Moonlit Thicket

Every so often, on still evenings, I hear the soft hooting of an owl drifting across the garden. I’ve never quite managed to spot him, but I love picturing him tucked away somewhere among the branches, those huge eyes catching the moonlight while the rest of him melts into the shadows. That was all the inspiration I needed for “Gaze In The Moonlit Thicket”.

I placed the owl high up in the branches, letting his shape stand proud against the night. Earthy browns, deep golds, and muted greens help him blend into the tangle of leaves and twigs. The darker tones give the piece its hushed, late night feel, while touches of silvery moonlight catch on the edges of the foliage.

For this piece, I chose 300gsm watercolour paper in A5 size, its subtle grain adding an extra layer of natural depth. I used loose watercolour washes for the soft, flowy background and coloured pencil for the finer textures. Take a look at the pictures below to see the close up details. I hope this quiet night visitor brings the same gentle calm to your day that his hooting brings to mine.
